Hey, team. Here is the info I got on the tournament next Saturday. We will pre-order pizza. I will send in a check. Hopefully each person can contribute $15 toward entry fee and pizza.
Thank you!!!

Welcome Teams,
You are registered for the FLL Eastern MA state tournament on Saturday December 17th located at Newton North High School sponsored by the Newton LigerBots, our high school FRC team. As we get closer to the event I will email a detailed tournament manual that should answer all your questions. We hope to have a fun, exciting day for everyone involved! There will be 48 teams at our event. This is our first year hosting the Eastern MA championship but we have a few qualifier tournaments under our belt. Some housekeeping items:
· You should have received an email from Colleen Shaver stating you’re coming to our event. The $100 tournament payment check should be made out to “City of Newton” and in the memo line write “403 - FLL Newton Tournament ”. Also include your team number. The check is due before the tournament. The checks should be mailed to me.

· If you need a receipt, please email me and I will have them at check in.
· This is very important. Have your team members memorize their team number! The judges and refs will ask for their team number only. Some kids write it on their hand. In a past event an award was given to the wrong team because team members gave the wrong number.
· We will be selling food – pizza, snacks, fruit, drinks, breakfast items (bars, donuts, muffins, etc.). New this year - we will brew our own Dunkin Donuts coffee and will have tea and hot chocolate available. Everything is reasonably priced. To ensure we have enough pizzas I will ask for pre-orders a few days before the event. We offer cheese, gluten free cheese and pepperoni pizzas. The high school is located 3 blocks from Newtonville with various restaurants including somewhat fast food – subs, pizza, burritos, Dunkin Donuts, Chinese takeout, Starbucks, and other sit down restaurants. You can bring in your own food. The Pits are in the school cafeteria and each team will be assigned one 6’ table for their display and any other items.
· Awards:
o Champion’s Award winner(s) must score in the top 40% of scores (vs 55% to advance).
o Champion’s Award winner will receive the chance to compete in the FLL World Festival.
o Winner of Innovative Solution will be nominated for the Global Innovation Award.
o Most reliable award: Awarded to the team who guesses closest to their average score in the qualification matches. Only teams who provide a guess during registration will be eligible for this award.
· Lightning round alliance playoff matches: All teams will participate in the Playoff Matches. These specially designed brackets are for fun while the judges deliberate and will not affect you overall robot performance scores. Separate trophies will be given for Robot Performance and Playoff matches and are independent of any judged awards. The format of the playoff matches will be “Lightning Rounds”. For these, teams will be paired with another team to form an alliance. They will be playing together on two separate tables to try and get the highest possible combined score. However, the alliance will only have 1.5 minutes to achieve this and the referees will only use one score sheet to assess the two tables. This means if both teams do the same mission, it will only be counted once.
· The tournament manual will be emailed next week. It’s 10+ pages an includes the following:
o Location, Parking, Registration and Contact Information
o Schedule of Events
o Tournament Overview
o Robot Matches and Rules
o Technical Judging
o Project Presentation Judging
o Core Values Judging
o Pit Area
o Awards
o Gracious Professionalism
o Food
o Floor plan
o Participating Teams
o Schedule by Team
· If teams want to sit near each other because of shared coaches, equipment, parts, etc. please email me so that we can set up the pit map appropriately.
This event will be run very similar as past state championships at WPI. We’re working the schedule it will be close to as follow. I don’t expect much change. Some times may be tweaked by 15 minutes or so. I hope to end before 5:30!
0715: Doors open for teams. Do not plan to arrive any earlier than 0715!
