Three and a half weeks left! The pressure's building!
Caleb will not be joining us as a team member in competition. He has other things he has to do, but he wants to go see us in competition. Hopefully he can join for next year's competition! In Project, since Caleb is not going to be here, Jackson has volunteered to take over the Student part with a costume change. The script has been added to and can be viewed at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1T66NvaEl9B668AJ7wP6DP5QRES4dMA77-3ysya0lB0Q/edit?usp=sharing Four weeks until competition! The pressure is starting to increase! Today, we went through a few Core Value exercises to help build teamwork. We tried the Helium Stick activity, which worked a little bit, and we also tried to build the tallest tower out of paper. We still need some work, though, as we were talking over one another and raised our voices, so Mrs. Magas promised to bring in a few random team-building exercises each meeting.
In Project, we decided who would play what part in our script. The parts are below: Reporter 1 - Shruti Reporter 2 - Arjun Teacher 1 - Austin Teacher 2 - Furneaux Principal - Jackson Parent - Moriah Tech Squad Leader - Dylan Tech Squad 2 - Dennis Student - Caleb We also added some more to our script, which is on our Google Drive. In Robot Game, we worked on our goal-shooting program for Sports and our loop-getting program for Search Engine. We still have lots to do in these four weeks before competition. Just keep working hard and don't give up! The competition is only 4 1/2 weeks away! Today, in Robot Game we tried to fix the program for getting the loop out of the Senses model, built an attachment to launch the ball for Sports, and started programming Sports. In Project, we started drafting a basic script based on the news report idea, which we had voted for. The script is in our Google Drive. We also made a logo for our Tech Squad!
5 weeks until competition! Mrs. Magas reviewed the FIRST Core Values with us and also assigned a few people to build their own robot and program them to do one of the challenges to get to know the robotics side of Lego League a bit better.
In Project, we voted to make our presentation a news report that incorporates video, with 4 voting for that versus 2 voting for an action movie. A logo for our Tech Squad is also under development. In Robot Game, we successfully managed to get the loop from Senses! Whoo-hoo! It's official! Caleb is our newest Crocobot! Today, our coach Joel, who has been training Caleb for the past few meetings, decided that he should join us, the Crocobots! We are so excited to have him as a part of our team!
In other news, over the long weekend, Jackson made a program that increases the power of the robot motors, a line follower, and a line follower interrupter. He shared it with everyone, and we hope to incorporate them into our programs. We also found an online article that showed how to make a more precise line follower. The link is http://thetechnicgear.com/2014/03/howto-create-line-following-robot-using-mindstorms/. In Robot Game, our 3rd program is almost able to get the loop from the Senses model. We just have to keep trying! Today, we got a lot accomplished! In Project, we finished a letter to the 5th grade teachers explaining to them about the Tech Squad and asking them to recommend students for it. In Robot, program #1 (Adapting & bar on Engagement) and #4 (grab loops from Search Engine) in our strategy are almost done, but #3 (Senses & Sports) still needs a lot of work.
Our long weekend work: Make a light-sensor program on EV3 software Research & find a source of info on teachers teaching using tech and students teaching teachers to use tech Look over Core Values & Core Values rubric & brainstorm ideas to improve team Log in to the Crocobots Google Drive and make sure you know how to use it -The username is (our team's shortened name)@gmail.com and the password is (3rd word of team name)(name of our mascot). Note: please do as many of these as you can, but if you aren't able to, don't worry about it. P.S. If you are ever absent from a FLL meeting, visit this blog as someone (hopefully) will make a blog post about what we accomplished that meeting. Today, we decided that the ideas we have had for our presentation weren't quite right for the actual presentation. It suggested that teachers weren't good with technology and also was too extreme as it involved a student dying of boredom. We need our presentation to be creative but effective in conveying our solution to our problem. Also, we want to include some of the things that we have been doing to implement the Tech Squad at the J.W. Martin Elementary School, where we meet. Our suggestions include maybe doing a news report or commercial and including video in it. Our ideas are still coming!
We also had a visitor today: Caleb! He is new at Martin School and he wanted to check our Lego League to see if he wants to join us. We showed him around and he seemed interested, so hopefully he will become a member! Today was a productive meeting. We created a Gmail for our team, as well as a survey for students to take to determine if they can be part of the Tech Squad, which is on our Google Drive. Also, our documents are all uploaded to Google Drive too. The account info can be found here. The username is (our team's shortened name)@gmail.com and the password is (3rd word of team name)(name of our mascot).
Can't believe it's October already! There's one and a half month left until competition, and we are getting ready. Today, we started building and programming to run our first planned program to complete Adapting to Conditions and push the bar on Engagement. Dylan also made a Gmail account for the Tech Squad, as well as a website! The account info is here, and our website is jwmtechsquad.weebly.com.
FYI, the Techno Falcons have also made their own website! Visit them at technofalconsrobotics.weebly.com! |
